Create Your Own Outfit Look book

Who hasn’t uttered the words ‘I have nothing to wear’ in the morning? We’ve all been there. We’re ready to dash out the door, but find ourselves standing in our underwear looking at a full closet of clothing, feeling flustered about what to put on. Outfit options run through our minds, but it’s usually the same ones we wore a couple days ago or even last week. Am I right?

The truth is, most of us only use about 20% of our closets 80% of the time. The rest is left as a sea of fabric to stare at. It’s not that we don’t want to utilize the rest of our clothing, but sometimes, we simply don’t know what to do with it, or often can’t remember an outfit combination we put together ages ago.

How do we fix this problem? While magazines are wonderful for fashion inspiration, the reality is that we don’t have those exact clothing items hanging currently in our closet. We do, however, have the means to create a little closet inspiration on our own by making our own look book filled with outfit options for ourselves.

A look book is essentially photo album of outfit options currently available in your wardrobe. It’s a great tool to ensure that we not only utilize our closets in full, but it also aides us on busy mornings when we aren’t sure what to put together. We can easily flip through our own fashion inspiration and, voila! We’ve selected an outfit for the day. You can now have Cher’s closet from Clueless.

Here are a few tips to create your look book:

  1. Take an afternoon either alone or with a friend (if opting to do this with friends, grab a bottle of wine!) and play with the clothing in your closet for an afternoon. See how many outfits you can create and take pictures of each one. Print these out or store them on your iPad or computer to create your look book. Doing this in a relaxed state will allow your creative juices to flow. Unsure of what matches? Try things you would never normally put together! You never know what you may like (hint: a colourful accessory can tie different colours together).
  2. When you get dressed in the morning, keep your phone or camera handy. Once you’re dressed, take a picture of yourself. This will ensure you’re constantly adding to your look book slowly.
  3. When you bring new clothing home, try it on with other clothing options you have in your closet before you put it away. This way, you’ll create outfits with it ahead of time.
  4. No time for trying each item on? No problem. Lay everything out on the floor or across your bed and take a picture that way.

If you find that you’re really stuck and still unsure of what will work best together, enlist the help of an image consultant.
