HOW SHOPPING FOR MY MOM CHANGED MY LIFE

My mom was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer at the age of 48.

It was a tough time for her and our family. We were all so close and naturally rooting for her to get better.

I was 24 years old at the time; a lover of fashion, but a woman that was aimlessly trying to find what she wanted to-do in life.

“Christie, you need to-do something in fashion,” my mom would tell me.

She knew how much I loved it.

How much it would light me up.

However, I never found an avenue within the industry that felt like a good fit for me.

My mom was a lover of fashion too. I remember watching her put together looks as a kid and thinking she was so glamourous. I was desperate to play dress-up in her clothing and watch her skirts “swish” on me as I twirled around in them.

She always looked so good.

Shopping dates were always so much fun together. We’d laugh, try-on pieces we loved in-stores, and just be present when spending time together.

I loved it so much.

During her fight with cancer, she had lost a lot of weight.

A lot.

Because of this, nothing she owned fit anymore. Nothing.

So, while out with a girlfriend one afternoon, I stopped into a store at the local mall and carefully picked out an outfit for my mom. Her birthday was coming up and I wanted to surprise her with a new look. She was someone who really took pride in getting ready, and I knew how much the lack of clothing options were troubling her. To her, it enhanced the mindset of “I’m sick.”

Carefully looking over the clothes, I picked out a few pieces for her that I thought she’d like based on our past trips together.

After wrapping them for her in anticipation of her birthday in a few weeks, I overheard her saying to my dad that an Easter brunch would be taking place with the extended family next week.

She was worried about what to wear and whether she’d have the energy to withstand the event.

So, I decided to run and grab her gift and give it to her early.

SHE LIT UP.

She was so happy for this spontaneous gift and tried her clothing on immediately.

It fit like a glove (which I was grateful for as I had to guess her size at the time).

She transformed. She glowed in her new outfit — so happy that in her new outfit she felt like herself. A renewed sense of energy came rushing to her and she was just beaming from ear to ear.

She felt confident.
She felt good.

When the Easter event came, she rocked that outfit beautifully. She was complimented by many and was quick to say, “thanks, Christie picked it out for me!”

The memory is burned in my mind.

See, it’s not about the clothing that I got her. It’s how it made her feel.

How it shifted her to a higher place, even in her darkest time.

She was beaming.

Though she passed a month later, I’ll never forget her smile and glow in that moment.

That experience changed my life forever.

That’s why I do what I do now.

I’ve been seeking to re-create that experience in every client I’ve worked with now over the past 11 years.

I believe all women deserve to feel beautiful and empowered in their own skin.

I believe all women deserve to experience the power of their style and how it can transform them.
